The Best Laptops With Disc Drives In 2022

DVDs, CDs, and other discs are becoming a lot less common these days, and for that reason, most laptops no longer come with built in disc drives. But there are still plenty of people who want a laptop with a disc drive, and if you’re one of those people, you may be a bit frustrated by the lack of options out there.

You might even be thinking that you’ll have to buy someone’s slow old second-hand laptop or even just keep your current laptop lying around to use whenever you need a disc drive.

But don’t worry, there are still actually quite a few modern laptops out there with built in disk drives, and some of them are actually quite good! So in this article, I’ve put together a list of the best laptops with disc drives that are available in 2022.

Seeing as choosing a laptop is not a one size fits all approach, and the best laptop for you will vary based on your budget and use case, I’ve actually compiled a list of five different laptops with disc drives with varying price points and features.

17.3 Inch HP Laptop – The Best Affordable Option

Pros

  • Most Affordable
  • Fast Storage

Cons

  • Not The Best Performance
  • Not Heaps Of Internal Storage

The most affordable (but still reasonably good) laptop I could find with a disc drive is this one from HP.

It doesn’t really seem to have a name so it might be a bit tricky to buy it in a shop, but if you click the button below, you’ll be taken to the Amazon listing for it.

It’s nothing overly fancy, but it has a processor that’s powerful enough to get you through regular day to day tasks, 4GB of RAM which isn’t huge but it’s enough to get by, and most importantly, it has a disc drive!

It has 128GB of internal storage which isn’t huge so you might need to get an external storage device of some kind to store some of your files on, but the storage is an SSD instead of a traditional HDD meaning it will run nice and fast which is always a good thing.

The screen is 17.3 inches which is nice and big and gives you plenty of space, it does make the laptop a little bit less portable but I think it’s worth the trade off. And, the screen has an antiglare coating which will make it easier to see in direct sunlight.

There’s not really much more to say about this laptop, but if you want an inexpensive laptop with a disc drive, that will still be perfectly useable for day to day tasks, this will be the perfect option for you.

Acer Aspire 3 – Heaps Of Internal Storage

Pros

  • Quite Affordable
  • Decent Performance
  • Heaps Of Storage

Cons

  • HDD Instead Of SSD

If you want a laptop with a disc drive, a huge amount of internal storage, and very good performance while still being available at a reasonable price, the Acer Aspire 3 might be more suitable.

It is slightly more expensive than the HP laptop I listed above, but considering what you get for the extra money, if you can afford it, it’s probably worth it.

It has a 10th Gen Intel Core i5 processor which is almost twice as good as the processor in the HP according to user benchmarks.

It has 8GB of RAM instead of the 4GB you get in the HP (so again, double) which can really make the experience of using the computer a lot better as it allows you to have a lot more apps and browser tabs all open at once.

And, it has a huge 1TB (1000GB) of internal storage which is huge compared to the 128GB you get in the HP. This means you could most likely store all your files on it and still have heaps of space to spare.

The only real downside of the Acer Aspire 3 compared to the HP is that while the 1TB of storage is great, it is an HDD instead of an SSD so transferring files on and off the computer will take a bit longer, and overall the computer might run a bit slower than it would if it had an SSD.

But really, this isn’t a huge deal, and when you’re getting such a great laptop for such a great price, you can’t really complain about something like that.

So overall, if you want a great laptop with a disc drive that also has plenty of internal storage and still won’t break the bank, the Acer Aspire 3 will be the one for you.

Another 17.3 Inch HP Laptop – The Best Option Overall

Pros

  • Great Performance
  • Good Value For Money

Cons

  • Not Heaps Of Internal Storage

This next laptop is quite different from the other 17.3 inch HP laptop at the top of this list, but it also doesn’t seem to have a name (I really wish HP would put more effort into naming their laptops).

But nevertheless, I added this HP laptop to the list because I think it’s probably the best option overall.

When you consider the price, performance, storage, and build quality, it very nicely combines the best of all those worlds into one great laptop.

It is slightly more expensive than the previous two options, but it’s still quite affordable as far as laptops go and for what you get I think it’s probably worth the extra money. It has the same powerful 10th Gen Intel Core i5 processor as the Acer Aspire, and the same 8GB of RAM so the performance will be great and it will effortlessly power through regular day to day tasks.

But what really sets it apart from the Acer Aspire is the storage, because while the Acer Aspire has 1000GB of internal storage, and this laptop only has 256GB, the internal storage in this laptop is an SSD instead of an HDD.

So while you won’t have room for quite as many files, 256GB is still plenty of space for most people, and this way, the experience of using the laptop and transferring files on and off it will be considerably faster.

So if you look at the entire package, this laptop has great performance including fast storage, likely enough internal storage space to fit all your files, and a built in disc drive, all for a very good price.

So while if you have specific needs or you value certain aspects of a computer more than others, you might be better of with one of the other laptops on this list, if you just want an overall great laptop with a disc drive, this is probably going to be your best option.

Yet Another 17.3 Inch HP Laptop – The Best Premium Laptop With A Disc Drive

Pros

  • Great Performance
  • Heaps Of Storage
  • Loads Of Ram

Cons

  • Not Cheap

Yes, I know, another 17.3 inch HP laptop without a name. Sorry if this is starting to get confusing.

If you don’t really mind how much you spend, and you just want to get the absolute best laptop with a disc drive that you possibly can, this nameless HP laptop will be your best option.

It has a really powerful AMD Ryzen 5 4500U processor which is essentially the next level up in performance compared to the previous two laptops.

And, it has a huge 16GB of RAM which means you’ll pretty much be able to open as many apps as you want all at once without running into any issues.

And to top all that off, it has a 1TB (1000GB) SSD for internal storage! So you’ll have heaps of space to store all your files on the computer, and the user experience and file transfer speeds will still be nice and fast because it’s SSD storage!

When you take all this into account, plus the decent build quality, nice screen, and good port selection, this really is a great laptop.

So while it’s not the cheapest laptop, it’s certainly worth the money if you can afford it, and it’s certainly the best laptop I can find that has a built in disc drive.

Dell Inspiron 15 5570 – The Best Option With A 15 Inch Screen

Pros

  • More Manageable Size
  • Decent Performance
  • Heaps Of Storage

Cons

  • A Bit Expensive Considering The Specs

You might have noticed quite a common pattern with all the other laptops on this list, and that’s the fact that they all have a 17.3 inch screen.

This is probably because you need to have a reasonably big laptop to fit a disc drive inside it, but depending on your use case, a 17 inch laptop might be a bit too big and impractical to carry around.

I quite enjoy using a 17 inch laptop, but I mainly just use it at my desk, and I realize if you want to move around a lot with your laptop (which is kind of the whole point in having a laptop), you might want something a bit smaller.

So if this sounds like, you and you would like a smaller laptop with a disc drive so that you can carry it around more easily, the Dell Inspiron 15 5570 is probably going to be the one for you.

It has a 15.6 inch screen, so it’s still not tiny and will still give you heaps of space to work with, but it does allow the overall footprint of the laptop to be considerably smaller and easier to move around which is nice.

Aside from the screen, it has an 8th Gen Intel Core i5 processor, so it’s not going to be quite as powerful as some of the others but it will still be perfectly fine at handling day to day tasks. And a nice big 12GB of RAM which will allow you to have plenty of different apps and tabs all open at once.

It has a nice big 1TB (1000GB) of internal storage which is great, but unfortunately, it is HDD storage instead of SSD so it will be a little slower than some of the others.

But overall, it’s still a great laptop, and if you want a slightly smaller laptop with a disc drive so that you can use DVDs or CDs without lugging around something huge, this will be the one for you.

Bonus Suggestion: An External Disk Drive

Pros

  • Cheaper
  • You Can Use Any Laptop You Want

Cons

  • Less Portable
  • Less Convenient

Okay, so this is kind of cheating, an external disk drive isn’t technically a laptop with a disk drive, but it could potentially be a very good option.

If none of the laptops I listed above quite suit your needs, you could just get an external disk drive like this one for under $30 and then plug it into any laptop you want via USB.

That way, rather than having to choose from the rather limited selection of laptops that come with built in disc drives these days, you can use any laptop you like.

This may not be super practical if you need to use a disk drive all the time or while you’re on the go as it is an extra device you’ll need to carry around. But if you just want a disc drive for those occasional moments when you need to use a disc, something like this could be perfect.
